Titre: Man in a Fur-lined Coat
Date de création: 1655 - 1660
Lieu de création: Europe
Dimensions physiques: w883 x h1149 cm (Complete)
Catalogue entry: With great impassivity and quietness of demeanor, a man, perhaps in his fifties, gazes out at the viewer, his mouth slightly open and his dark eyes introspective. He is depicted standing before a dark background and wearing an exotic costume. Beneath his fur-trimmed cloak appears a resplendent red garment cut low at the neck to reveal a gold-embroidered collar and a pleated shirt. Near the hilt of a sword or dagger, one hand rests on a sash around his girth, while his left arm extends out of the frame (technical examination indicates that the canvas has probably been cut down slightly at left and right, as well as below). He wears a strap across his chest with what may be a pouch attached at lower right, and a gold chain from which dangles a small object that has been identified as a toothpick. A broad, black hat sits atop his head, framed by long, curly locks, and an earring is visible hanging from his left ear. A majority of the more than three hundred surviving paintings by Rembrandt are portraits—merchants with their spouses, financiers, physicians, city officials, art dealers, industrialists, craftsmen, scholars, poets, preachers, and his own family, in addition to his many self-portraits executed throughout his four-decade career. The sitter in Man in a Fur-lined Coat has not been identified. It is possible that Rembrandt's intent here, as with some of his other works, was to capture the likeness of a contemporary in the guise of an historical figure, conceivably an Old Testament personage. Painted in the artist's characteristic late style, the light enveloping the figure, the broad brushstrokes, and the rich, glowing colors all combine to endow the image with an uncanny stillness, as well as, paradoxically, a mysterious yet palpable vitality.
